How can a back injury change your life?

by | Oct 10, 2022 | Personal Injury

Suffering from a back injury can have a huge and detrimental impact on your overall health. Not only can it have physical impacts, but it can also change a person’s mental health, too.

In what ways do these changes manifest? And can they have a permanent impact on a person’s life?

Chronic pain and mental health

The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) talks about the psychological impact of back pain. First of all, any sort of chronic physical pain is shown to have detrimental repercussions on the victim in question. People are simply not built to handle ongoing chronic physical ailments on a mental level, even if certain amounts of adjustment can and do happen.

Chronic pain takes a mental toll, resulting in numerous issues like depression, anxiety and even trauma or stressor-based disorders in some people. These issues can make it even harder for a person to live their life.

The physical toll and job loss

Of course, it takes a physical toll on top of that. Many people will lose some of their range of motion due to the injury, which can prevent them from working their usual job. In some cases, if the injury takes too long to heal or the healing process requires abstaining from physical activity, a person may even risk losing their job position.

This can cause financial issues to crop up in a person’s life, which can cause a cascade of other problems to follow. This is why medical treatment after a back injury along with potential compensation is so important.
